Brief description
The international research project KLIMACrops, entitled “Strategies for the adaptation of arable farming systems to climate change and their contribution to climate protection in the Upper Rhine region”, is developing forward-looking solutions for agriculture to meet the challenges of climate change. The aim is to make agriculture more resilient to extreme weather conditions, ensure yield stability and at the same time protect resources and the climate.

At the LUFA Speyer field trial station (Rinkenbergerhof), the project focuses on two innovative approaches:

Leguminous intercropping before maize: this approach investigates how the use of mineral fertilizers can be reduced and soil fertility improved through biological nitrogen fixation, green manure effects and a more diverse crop rotation.

Relay cropping of soybeans and rye: This method combines both crops to use water and nutrients more efficiently, promote biodiversity and achieve stable yields even under difficult weather conditions.

KLIMACrops brings together practical agriculture, science and consultancy to jointly shape the arable farming systems of the future. Through workshops, advisory services and international cooperation, the methods developed are put directly into practice. With model farms and innovative approaches, KLIMACrops makes an important contribution to the establishment of climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture.
