Where are standard soils used?
Standard soils are used in particular for pesticide approval studies according to GLP (“Good Laboratory Practice”) on leaching behavior, degradation and metabolism, influence on soil microflora and fauna, adsorption/desorption behavior of pesticides in soils as well as for vegetation trials in the laboratory and in the field. As a rule, soils with certain characteristics should be used for these studies in accordance with the guidelines of the JKI (Julius Kühn-Institute) and other relevant guidelines (OECD). However, our standard soils are also used for research purposes with completely different questions without reference to pesticides.
Our standard soil types
We offer various types of soil, which differ in particular in terms of their organic matter content, grain size composition and pH value.
The chemical and physical properties of our standard soils can be found here:
Advantages of standard soils from LUFA Speyer for trial participants and evaluating bodies
The use of standard soils from LUFA Speyer offers significant advantages:
- Long-term availability and therefore comparability of trials from several years and/or with different active ingredients
- No difficult search, procurement, preparation and maintenance of suitable soils
- Free delivery at short notice with all necessary data on location, history, treatment, sampling (in accordance with ISO standard no. 10381-6) and analyses (all in accordance with GLP)
- Delivery fresh from the field (with active microflora), stored (air-dried) or steamed (surcharge)
Our soils are not a mixture of individual components, but naturally formed soils from selected areas of widely occurring soil types that are currently used for agriculture and have not been treated with pesticides, organic fertilizers (except for green manure grown on the respective areas) or biocidal fertilizers for at least 5 years prior to sampling. Mineral fertilizers are applied for a maximum of 3 months prior to soil sampling. The soil is normally taken from a depth of 0-20 cm, processed and sieved to 2 mm.
