Invitation to an evening lecture on November 26, 2025: How much animal husbandry does our agriculture need?

Where? Landesbibliothekszentrum, Otto-Mayer-Str. 9, 67346 Speyer

When? Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 6 p.m.

Speaker: Dr. Jason Hayer (Teaching and Research Institute for Animal Husbandry, Hofgut Neumühle)

As part of the public lecture series “A Bouquet of Agriculture, Environmental Protection, and Consumer Protection,” which we are organizing in cooperation with the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center to mark our 150th anniversary, Dr. Jason Hayer, Director of the Teaching and Research Institute for Animal Husbandry at Hofgut Neumühle, will give a lecture.

About the lecture: What role does animal husbandry play in our agriculture? This is currently the subject of intense technical and social debate. On the one hand, it contributes significantly to the supply of high-quality food and the maintenance of diverse cultural landscapes, but on the other hand, it is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Farm animals are not only food suppliers, but also food competitors for humans. Against the backdrop of this discussion, consumer behavior in Europe is changing—the consumption of meat and milk is declining.

The lecture will examine questions such as how much animal husbandry our agriculture actually needs in the future and what concepts exist for achieving a balance between plant and animal production. In addition to these questions, strategies for improving sustainability, for example through optimized feeding, adapted husbandry systems, or regenerative methods of feed cultivation, will be presented.
