Invitation to the evening lecture on 23.04.2025: Agri-Photovoltaics - Fruit growing in a new light

As part of the public lecture series "A bouquet of flowers from agriculture, environmental and consumer protection", which we are organizing on the occasion of our 150th anniversary in cooperation with the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Centre (Landesbibliothekszentrum), Greta Ott from LTZ Augustenberg will give a lecture on “Agri-Photovoltaics - Fruit growing in a new light”.

About the lecture: Climate change is threatening our harvests through strong solar radiation and increasing extreme weather events such as hail and heavy rainfall. In addition, electricity generation and agricultural production are competing for the use of land. Agri-photovoltaics could help to solve these problems: electricity and food can be produced on the same area and there is additional weather protection for the plants. The potential of the technology for Germany is being researched by over 20 partners at various locations in the “Agri-Photovoltaics Baden-Württemberg Model Region” project. 

At the LTZ Augustenberg in Karlsruhe, six different apple and two pear varieties are grown organically under different PV systems. Greta Ott, one of the researchers involved in the project, takes you into the world of domestic fruit growing and its challenges in times of climate change. Is Agri-PV just a research toy or a sustainable solution for fruit growers to secure their yields and income?
